Evonik Industries - Biomaterials for Implant Applications

It's all about biocompatibility

The biocompatibility of a medical device depends on the kind of body contact (contact to skin only, blood, fatty tissue, bone etc.) and on the duration of such contact. Therefore the biological evaluation of a medical device must be based on the intended application.

We offer VESTAKEEP® PEEK M Grades (body contact time limited to 30 days) and VESTAKEEP® PEEK i Grades (long term body contact time for more than 30 days) in powder granules and stockshapes. These products have been formulated to fulfil the needs and requirements of the Medical device industry. A comprehensive testing program performed on granules and stockshapes proved the high biocompatibility of VESTAKEEP® medical grade PEEK. To ensure a high level of safety of our materials, we run cytotoxicity tests according to EN ISO 10993-5 on every batch of resin and stock shapes.

Evoik produces a wide range of high-performance materials, e.g. for the automotive, aviation, electronics, photovoltaic and medical industries. It manufactures high-performance polymers based on polyetherether ketone (PEEK) and polyimides to meet extremely high-tech mechanical, thermal and chemical requirements.

The High Performance Polymers Business Line is our specialist for customised solutions with high-performance polymers. This business line has successfully entered new markets, including gas and offshore oil pipelines and applications in the photovoltaic sector.

Its product range also includes materials for high-tech applications such as the high-temperature polymer VESTAKEEP® PEEK, which is characterised by exceptionally high heat distortion resistance, high mechanical stability and rigidity, making it an attractive alternative to metal. VESTAKEEP® PEEK and the lightweight polyimide foam ROHACELL® are both used in the construction of planes.

Further promising developments are innovative applications such as membrane technology for cost- and energy-efficient separation of CO2, for example, in the purification of crude biogas to produce biomethane, which is facilitated by our polyimide hollow fiber membranes.
